Food Allergies on the Rise

I just came back from attending the international food allergy and anaphylaxis meeting.  Rates of food allergy are increasing throughout the world, worse in the western world, affecting around 30% of people at some stage in their lives. Children and adults can be affected causing various manifestations from eczema, hives, to many gastrointestinal problems such as eosinophilic esophagitis* to life threatening conditions called anaphylaxis.

Fortunately new research shows children with food allergies can successfully become desensitized. Peanut desensitization through oral or skin route is still in the research stage but shows some promises. The meeting also highlighted many new treatments for food allergies.

With the holiday season approaching, make sure you and your children are prepared so it will not interfere with the enjoyment of the season, by keeping it safe. Talk to your allergist, have a treatment plan, both preventative and “just in case” treatments.
